12 Relaxing Habits

Stressed spelled backwards is desserts. - Loretta Laroche

Honestly, this quote makes me giggle and happens to be a favorite! When I worked a high stress job, as a computer engineer and Test lead, this silly quote was plastered on my communicator. Visible for my stressed out co-workers to see and as a happy reminder of my love of sweet treats.
This gets me thinking of ways I like to de-stress. Here are twelve ways that may inspire you to relax.

1. Hike in the mountains. Beautiful meadows of flowers and cascading waterfalls are so peaceful. I love to pack a lunch and just rest in the serenity.

2. Spend time with the ocean. One of the most awe-inspiring wonders in life is the ocean. Staring out into the expanse, watching as the waves crash. It doesn't matter how my day is going, the ocean makes it better.

3. Snuggle in a blanket with warm tea. As a creature of habit, this is my most reached for. Can be quickly and easily done, but offers the comfort needed to relax.

4. Watch stars from a hammock. I am a little obsessed with lying in a hammock. In the still of the night, cocooned and watching the starry night ranks high on my list.

5. Warm Bubble bath. I wasn't a bath taker until I had children and discovered what a privilege it is to bathe in peace. Just be careful not to fall asleep!

6. Camping for the outdoorsy folk. There is something about getting out of the city that is freeing. The air just a little bit sweeter and life a lot slower.

7. Read a favorite book. Taking the time to invest in something you enjoy can be very relaxing.

8. Journal. I'm a firm believer in self reflection. Taking the time to self evaluate and jotting it down can show areas in need of improvement or remind you of what is good in life.

9. Watch a sunset. Simply breathtaking and profoundly beautiful.

10. Deep breathing. Not only is it good for your body, but can help to clear your mind.

11. Listen to soothing music. I find a deep sea of calm in classical songs.

12. Paint. I mean it. Even if you aren't a painter. Just let your mind run free through the paintbrush. Paint outside the lines. All you need is a canvas and some acrylics. And once it dries, you can do it over again.

Relaxing is important to help us re-energize. It may not always be easy to find the time, but it is necessary.

What are some of your favorite relaxing habits?!

Budget Life: Homeschooling

Hi there. I am starting a mini series called Budget Life that will include tips on how we live on a single income. Today's topic is homeschooling. Homeschooling can be expensive with all the fancy curriculums and extracurricular activities available today. It feels overwhelming to decide what's worth the money and what's not. Homeschooling is also a very personal endeavor and no two homeschools are exactly the same. With that said, I am going to share with you some of the ways I navigate homeschooling on a strict budget. Here is a list of FREE homeschooling resources that I personally use. Find free community events and schedule them on your calendar. Surf Facebook for local events or the famous Google search. There are free STEM fests, Healthy kid events, Movies in the park, Fishing with free-to-use poles & bait, Concerts, Educational library classes, and all the free holiday events. This is a huge money saver and you can still have great fun and do lots of li...

10 Ways to Prompt Learning

We knew from the start we wanted to homeschool our kids. Now with a toddler, we've ventured into schooling on a daily basis. I have a lot to learn moving forward with educating our children, but here are a list of 10 things we do to prompt learning... 1. Library. They have free classes that we attend weekly, that include activities such as story time, crafts, music and dance, and socializing with peers. The library is also great for reading, teaching your littluns to check out books, library etiquette practice, and exploring educational online games. 2. Aquarium/Zoo. My husband and I quite enjoy going to view the animals as well,  so it's a fun family outing. And educational! 3. Educational Movies. Our kids rather love and learn from Leapfrogs, VeggieTales, and Wild Kratts. You can find some educational movies at the library! 4. Discovery Channel. Another family friendly, educational, Friday night plan! 5. Workbook. I found an $8 kindergarten workbook at a local Wal...

The Ways of Old

Little House on the Prairie shaped my life as a young girl. With dreams of romping through the meadow, stoking a fire, and cooking in a black kettle; a simplified life was calling me. Ironically, I grew up in the city and ate frozen burritos for dinner. Where's my people at? In my daydreams, I fancy sitting in a rocking chair, sipping lemongrass tea, as I knit my children a sweater. Truth is I don't own a rocking chair and I haven't the slightest clue how to knit...yet. Here's the thing, you can learn anything you set your mind to, at least that's what I'm teaching my children. Instead of just saying it though, showing it seems to make a lasting impression. So, this apartment living, city dwelling momma is on a mission to teach her children the ways of old. That looks like gardening on an apartment balcony, in pots, painstakingly every year. Why? Because there is a lesson of beauty in growing your own food. Understanding the fruits of your labor....
