4 Ways- date your spouse after kids

Date night. We all remember what those were like. You know, before the train of kids came along. Now, date night is off in a far away magical land filled with unicorns. (I may have read too many kid stories.)

It doesn't matter who you talk to, what classes you attend, or what books you read on the topic of marriage, Communication is always a key point. So, after much failure to balance being a wife and mother, and years to practice, we've settled on in-home dating.

The dates that happen after the kids are in bed. The dates the bring you back together after long days at the office. Time spent rehydrating a drained relationship after wiping up sticky and messy all day. The moments that inspire you to keep on keepin' on.

Dates

We need them with our spouse. If not only to remind us who we are embarking on this crazy journey called life with.

To grow.

To vent.

To be challenged.

After years of trial and error, one thing has become blatantly obvious. Popping in a movie for date night does not help develop our communication. It's easy, convenient. We like movies. When it's over, shut it down and head to bed. But it wasn't keeping us connected with each other.

This makes me think back to dating days. Movie for the first date. Because it is less pressure to talk much and sort of breaks the ice. Second, coffee shop date. This is the part where you actually start getting to know one another. And hey, awkward silence? Well, you watched a movie together, so now there's a talking point.

But I'd already been through those steps with my now husband. We needed more coffee shop dates in our marriage. Here are some in-home dating ideas..

1. Tea time. We're big tea drinkers. It is rather comforting sippin' tea while curled up next to your spouse, chattin' the night away.

2. Foot rubs. Dear friends of ours sit on opposite ends of the couch and rub each other's feet as they talk. After seeing their lovely marriage, well, maybe there's more to a foot rub than just feet!

3. Read. Sometimes we enjoy reading together, but more often than not, we've got our noses buried in different novels. Reading next to each other is still pleasant and afterwards there is often something interesting to share. Also consider audio books or podcasts. Something that will likely strike up meaningful conversation.

4. Cheese platter. One of our very favorites. Seriously, who doesn't like fruit and cheese?! It can be simple or make it more of a romantic dinner. Goat cheese, almonds, berries, dark chocolate. Pair it with some bread and wine, if you're into that. And relish in the fact that you saved a bunch of money by eating this at home instead of a fancy restaurant!

Striving for a stronger marriage, one coffee date at a time!

10 Ways to Prompt Learning

We knew from the start we wanted to homeschool our kids. Now with a toddler, we've ventured into schooling on a daily basis. I have a lot to learn moving forward with educating our children, but here are a list of 10 things we do to prompt learning... 1. Library. They have free classes that we attend weekly, that include activities such as story time, crafts, music and dance, and socializing with peers. The library is also great for reading, teaching your littluns to check out books, library etiquette practice, and exploring educational online games. 2. Aquarium/Zoo. My husband and I quite enjoy going to view the animals as well,  so it's a fun family outing. And educational! 3. Educational Movies. Our kids rather love and learn from Leapfrogs, VeggieTales, and Wild Kratts. You can find some educational movies at the library! 4. Discovery Channel. Another family friendly, educational, Friday night plan! 5. Workbook. I found an $8 kindergarten workbook at a local Wal...

Budget Life: Homeschooling

Hi there. I am starting a mini series called Budget Life that will include tips on how we live on a single income. Today's topic is homeschooling. Homeschooling can be expensive with all the fancy curriculums and extracurricular activities available today. It feels overwhelming to decide what's worth the money and what's not. Homeschooling is also a very personal endeavor and no two homeschools are exactly the same. With that said, I am going to share with you some of the ways I navigate homeschooling on a strict budget. Here is a list of FREE homeschooling resources that I personally use. Find free community events and schedule them on your calendar. Surf Facebook for local events or the famous Google search. There are free STEM fests, Healthy kid events, Movies in the park, Fishing with free-to-use poles & bait, Concerts, Educational library classes, and all the free holiday events. This is a huge money saver and you can still have great fun and do lots of li...

Portion Fix Eating

Journeys are better when shared together. As a way to keep track of physical, mental & emotional growth, I am going to give you front row seats to the latest part of my fitness journey. I am honing in on my diet & exercise this week with a strict meal plan & consistent exercise. Sunday evening, I spent a few hours in front of my computer creating a 7 day menu based on color coded containers for the Vegan Plan B. The plan is based on a completely whole foods, approximately 1500-1800 calorie, 6 meals a day lifestyle. The containers are a way to ensure portion control or prevent one from over-eating. This is the first day of following my new meal plan... Due to my busy schedule, I did not eat the meals evenly spaced, so I found myself excessively hungry mid-afternoon. However, that was my fault. As you will see below I had quite a lot of food mapped out for my Monday... B: Shakeology x1 + Teaspoon of PB x1 S: Watermelon x2 L: Baked Caul...
