6 ways- Making Birthdays Meaningful

I'm on a mission to value people more and show them I care in better ways. Here are some meaningful birthday ideas...

1. Cake me likey. We had a simple tradition growing up, siblings made each other birthday cakes. Frosting, sprinkles, writing, candles. Then singing would commence and all would be merry (until the inevitable bickering started). Honestly, this saves you money, allows for artistic freedom, and gives your children a practical way to show love to each other. Making your friends a cake will surely delight too.

2. Card me. I was poking through my 'memory piles' and found a crude drawing on a very un-neatly folded sheet of paper. With misspellings, it said something like 'Happy Birthday, love sis.' The drawing is what I assumed to be my sister and I. Needless to say, it brought a smile to my face. How long have I had that? I dunno, maybe 15 years plus. A very sweet, simple, childhood birthday card still made me smile all these years later. I've tossed so many store bought cards over the years.

3. Gifts and gadgets. Unfortunately, most gifts go unused or get thrown out. So why not invest in natural soaps or essential oils. Gifts that will likely be used and are worth having.

4. Get in contact. Good ol' fashion phone call, email, text, letter in the snail mail. 'Hey, I know you're still alive and today you were born, some odd years ago, and I'm glad.' I personally love getting surprises in the mail. Because let's be honest, you actually had to put in effort with the whole envelope and stamp drama, so I'm convinced you care.

5. Got time? In the past, I have gotten a dear friend a gift card to a favorite restaurant. Attached was a little note saying something like I'm taking you to dinner and here is a reminder. Laughably, after living in different states and being consumed by life, we went two years before cashing in on that particular dinner. Other awesome time gifts: water park passes, movie tickets, gift cards. Or do it simple ya'll, get crazy and invite your friend over for dinner at your home. What better way to show you care than giving your time to someone?!

6. Donate to a charity in their name. Be sure it is one they support, but what an epic way to make a birthday meaningful. Charity:water is an on point organization if you're looking for an honest, forthcoming charity. 100% of the donations go towards water projects and when the well is completed they send you the GPS coordinates, so you can see for yourself. Here's my Birthday Campaign.

Let those in your life know how loved they are, in meaningful ways!

Budget Life: Homeschooling

Hi there. I am starting a mini series called Budget Life that will include tips on how we live on a single income. Today's topic is homeschooling. Homeschooling can be expensive with all the fancy curriculums and extracurricular activities available today. It feels overwhelming to decide what's worth the money and what's not. Homeschooling is also a very personal endeavor and no two homeschools are exactly the same. With that said, I am going to share with you some of the ways I navigate homeschooling on a strict budget. Here is a list of FREE homeschooling resources that I personally use. Find free community events and schedule them on your calendar. Surf Facebook for local events or the famous Google search. There are free STEM fests, Healthy kid events, Movies in the park, Fishing with free-to-use poles & bait, Concerts, Educational library classes, and all the free holiday events. This is a huge money saver and you can still have great fun and do lots of li...

10 Ways to Prompt Learning

We knew from the start we wanted to homeschool our kids. Now with a toddler, we've ventured into schooling on a daily basis. I have a lot to learn moving forward with educating our children, but here are a list of 10 things we do to prompt learning... 1. Library. They have free classes that we attend weekly, that include activities such as story time, crafts, music and dance, and socializing with peers. The library is also great for reading, teaching your littluns to check out books, library etiquette practice, and exploring educational online games. 2. Aquarium/Zoo. My husband and I quite enjoy going to view the animals as well,  so it's a fun family outing. And educational! 3. Educational Movies. Our kids rather love and learn from Leapfrogs, VeggieTales, and Wild Kratts. You can find some educational movies at the library! 4. Discovery Channel. Another family friendly, educational, Friday night plan! 5. Workbook. I found an $8 kindergarten workbook at a local Wal...

The Ways of Old

Little House on the Prairie shaped my life as a young girl. With dreams of romping through the meadow, stoking a fire, and cooking in a black kettle; a simplified life was calling me. Ironically, I grew up in the city and ate frozen burritos for dinner. Where's my people at? In my daydreams, I fancy sitting in a rocking chair, sipping lemongrass tea, as I knit my children a sweater. Truth is I don't own a rocking chair and I haven't the slightest clue how to knit...yet. Here's the thing, you can learn anything you set your mind to, at least that's what I'm teaching my children. Instead of just saying it though, showing it seems to make a lasting impression. So, this apartment living, city dwelling momma is on a mission to teach her children the ways of old. That looks like gardening on an apartment balcony, in pots, painstakingly every year. Why? Because there is a lesson of beauty in growing your own food. Understanding the fruits of your labor....
