9 Ways to Mix Up Valentines

Yup. It's almost here. With the pink and red balloons, flower bouquets, and chocolate hearts at every turn, there is no doubt that V-day is upon us.

Here are some ways to mix it up this Valentines day...

1. Family movie night. If you have kids, maybe rent a new movie and get that air popper out. One of my favorite treats as a child was finding chocolate chips in the popcorn bowl! Enjoy some snuggles while you are at it!

2. Homemade Card Share. I know, I know, there are stores that sell cards. We don't have to be so old fashioned anymore. Hear me out. There is something thoroughly sweet about getting a homemade card. They are personalized, tailored just for the recipients, with favorite colors, pictures, and phrases. As kids, we would make cards for each member of the family and then gather around and card swap. It was an event that took time and effort, which in turn has created a lasting memory.

3. If it's just the two of you or you miraculously found a babysitter, romantic date night is so on. Break out that wine bottle you've been saving. Prepare a favorite meal. Aú gratin potatoes and asparagus with a Hollandaise sauce anyone? Dress up! Make it special. Play footsies under a candle lit table. Have an amazing date night with a comfortable price tag!

4. Poems. I am a lover of poetry and writings, so I'm naturally drawn to this approach. Maybe write your loved one a poem. It can be cheesy. However, I know writing isn't for everyone. So, maybe leave it to the professionals. There is nothing wrong with reading a little Shakespeare to set the mood.

5. Spread the love. As a couple or family, show love to someone outside your home. Maybe a picture for your librarian, a warm cookie for your mailman, or a hot cup of coffee for a homeless person. Visit an old folks home, a shelter, or an orphanage (Be sure to call first on these). That reminds me, I need to take my own advice this holiday. Noted!

6. Practical gift. We have taken a minimalist approach to life, so gifts need to be practical to remain in our tiny living space. This year, following ripped jeans a few weeks ago, the kiddos are getting new pants. Wam bam, thank you ma'am.

7. Paint her toes. This one makes me giggle. I'm envisioning my reader's eyes got real big just now. Ya ya, well call me crazy, but I think it's adorable. No, this is not for everyone, so skip on if this gives you anxiety. But I recall being glum one day and my husband came to cheer me up by painting my toenails. Did he do a great job? Sorry babe, nope. When he was finished though, I did that whole laugh cry thing. It was such a sweet, selfless act that I've never forgotten.

8. Game night. Why not call a few family friends over and have a good ol' Taboo throw down?! Maybe whip out a game of spoons or take it old school with some charades. Share the holiday with friends that add love and joy into your life!

9. Nothing. I do declare this has to be my most brilliant idea ever. Okay, maybe not, but keep reading. There is a ton of pressure to have the best Valentine's day. Whether it be the best gifts or the most expensive dinner, it seems like there is a lot of expectation. Sometimes, I just don't go for that. Yup, we've skipped this sacred holiday before and our marriage survived. Just be sure to communicate so everyone is on the same page!

No matter what you decide to do on February 14th, I hope it is filled with joy! Cheers!

Budget Life: Homeschooling

Hi there. I am starting a mini series called Budget Life that will include tips on how we live on a single income. Today's topic is homeschooling. Homeschooling can be expensive with all the fancy curriculums and extracurricular activities available today. It feels overwhelming to decide what's worth the money and what's not. Homeschooling is also a very personal endeavor and no two homeschools are exactly the same. With that said, I am going to share with you some of the ways I navigate homeschooling on a strict budget. Here is a list of FREE homeschooling resources that I personally use. Find free community events and schedule them on your calendar. Surf Facebook for local events or the famous Google search. There are free STEM fests, Healthy kid events, Movies in the park, Fishing with free-to-use poles & bait, Concerts, Educational library classes, and all the free holiday events. This is a huge money saver and you can still have great fun and do lots of li...

10 Ways to Prompt Learning

We knew from the start we wanted to homeschool our kids. Now with a toddler, we've ventured into schooling on a daily basis. I have a lot to learn moving forward with educating our children, but here are a list of 10 things we do to prompt learning... 1. Library. They have free classes that we attend weekly, that include activities such as story time, crafts, music and dance, and socializing with peers. The library is also great for reading, teaching your littluns to check out books, library etiquette practice, and exploring educational online games. 2. Aquarium/Zoo. My husband and I quite enjoy going to view the animals as well,  so it's a fun family outing. And educational! 3. Educational Movies. Our kids rather love and learn from Leapfrogs, VeggieTales, and Wild Kratts. You can find some educational movies at the library! 4. Discovery Channel. Another family friendly, educational, Friday night plan! 5. Workbook. I found an $8 kindergarten workbook at a local Wal...

The Ways of Old

Little House on the Prairie shaped my life as a young girl. With dreams of romping through the meadow, stoking a fire, and cooking in a black kettle; a simplified life was calling me. Ironically, I grew up in the city and ate frozen burritos for dinner. Where's my people at? In my daydreams, I fancy sitting in a rocking chair, sipping lemongrass tea, as I knit my children a sweater. Truth is I don't own a rocking chair and I haven't the slightest clue how to knit...yet. Here's the thing, you can learn anything you set your mind to, at least that's what I'm teaching my children. Instead of just saying it though, showing it seems to make a lasting impression. So, this apartment living, city dwelling momma is on a mission to teach her children the ways of old. That looks like gardening on an apartment balcony, in pots, painstakingly every year. Why? Because there is a lesson of beauty in growing your own food. Understanding the fruits of your labor....
